91. Lumnitzera racemosa


Botanical Name: Lumnitzera racemosa Willd. [Combreataceae]
Common Name: Black Mangrove, किर्पा kirpa (Marathi)
Lumnitzera, named after the German botanist, Stephan Lumnitzer (1750-1806)

Distribution: Mangrove habitat of Western coasts, Eastern coasts of India, Bangladesh, Indonesia
Places observed: Talzan, Charkop-Mumbai
Flowering Class: Dicot
Habitat: Mangrove
Habit: Shrub or small Tree
Flowering and Fruiting: Flowering June to October-November, Fruiting: December to March along with sparse flowering

The Plant
Stem
Young stem is reddish  


For older trees, the bark is grey and fissured longitudinally 


Leaves
Leaves are sessile. Alternately arranged on the stem. Simple , 3-7 cm long and 2-3 cm wide in size ,  Succulent and have Serrated Margin. The shape of the leaf is obovate and at the tip there is a notch. 



Flowers
Flowers in leaf axils in small spike. Flowers are white in colour, the calyx is green and tube like. The calyx is divided into 5 small lobes at the calyx tube tip.  Stamens :10, arranged in 2 whorls.





Fruits
Fruit is tube like, 1-2 cm long, yellow green and contains 1 seed.


Flowers are insect pollinated.
Unlike typical mangrove species, this plant does not use  vivipary or cryptovivipary for seed germination.

Druce [Capparaceae] Common Name: Indian Cadaba  Marathi: habal, vaelivee Habit: Shrub Habitat: Dry deciduous forests, I have seen it near open area near pond and near creek. Distribution: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Kerala Local Distribution: Talzan, SGNP, Haven't observed this in Tungareshwar (may be because its a hilly region at higher elevation) Global Distribution: Endemic to India, Bangladesh, Pakistan , Sri Lanka , Myanmar  Flowering Season:  Perennial , flowering is throughout the year (Mostly November to March).
